Tips on using this forum..

(1) Explain your problem, don't simply post "This isn't working". What were you doing when you faced the problem? What have you tried to resolve - did you look for a solution using "Search" ? Has it happened just once or several times?

(2) It's also good to get feedback when a solution is found, return to the original post to explain how it was resolved so that more people can also use the results.

Hi all,
Can you tell me in brief explanation, what is a difference between P6 and P3, or what is new in P6 against P3.

Thanks a lot

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olfactory_memory

There is also evidence suggesting that there are deficits in olfactory memory in individuals with brain degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Dementia.

A huge difference might be customer support and quality of the products.

P3 was supported by Primavera a different Company, then the name and the products were acquired by ORACLE. P6 was originally developed by a third company.

P3 was a very stable software and had very few bugs, but by what I have observed here it seems P6 experience is quite different.

For a report on ORACLE customer satisfaction follow the link, then you will be informed and no surprises will be blamed on you if you recommend P6, always make an informed recommendations.

 HI ALL

I AM NEW TO PRIMAVERA. HAve used MS PRoject and have good understanding of Project Management Tools and MEthodologies. HAve completed PMP exam preparation course and worked in CAPEX related projects in Toyota Manufacturing Division for up to 4 years.

I would appreciate if somebody can help me finding a career in Petrochemical / Oil and Gas in Planning / Scheduling / Project Management discispline? Also, I have P6 CD on me but every time I install it, I do not get any success. P6 installation steps are requird too.

Thanks and Look fwd to hear from someone soon.

Best regards to all!

P6 is very user friendly, fast and has rich graphics interface when compared to P3. Resources and cost management is very simple and powerful in P6.

Done. Please understand that this matrix is now out of date because P6 is on version 7 with many more fixes and features.

The matrix downloaded from Primavera is readily available and not copyrighted. I would not, of course, distribute anything from the Paul Harris book that I recommend for detailed information on the topic.

Thanks,

Done. Truly, if anyone would like to see a well-written detailed outline of what’s new in P6, you might pick up a copy of Project Planning & Control Using Primavera P6, by Paul E. Harris. He details new features from P3 to P5 to P6, and includes detailed differences between Primavera and Microsoft Project, too. He’s very knowledgeable about both products and I learned a lot from this book. I downloaded the matrix from Primavera and it’s not very well done.

Forgive me, but I thought this thread started with someone wanting to know the difference between the two versions. Given that, the differences are so many as to make P6 much more than an update of P3. I’ve been using it since it was available, and - while I am presently using P6.2 - there has been no further version introduced. And really, if you keep your maintenance current, new versions are offered at no cost.

I maintain schedules for multiple projects and multiple clients. I could not do this in P3.

Kind regards,

Ellyn Gilbride

Thanks Ellyn, with deepest respect to you we all know the difference.

However by the time we get to start using P6, Primavera would come out with P7,8,9,10......

I think Primavera is a very powerful software and sensible planners will make the best use of it whatever the version.

Best Regards,
Arjun Thomas.

Perhaps you did not thoroughly review the worksheet items. I believe I got the document from Primavera and it pretty clearly outlines both new features in P6 and those that have been changed between the two versions.

If you would like to see a well-written detailed outline of what’s new in P6, you might pick up a copy of Project Planning & Control Using Primavera P6, by Paul E. Harris. He details new features from P3 to P5 to P6. There are many capabilities not found in P3, and I, for one, find them important and useful. I cannot imagine going back to P3.

And as for MS Project, well what can I say? It’s not even in the same league as P6. And anyway, how can you have have a useful schedule without a data date?

Take care,

Ellyn

Hi All,

Looks like the difference on P6 vs P3 will go on forever.
Thats a good thing.

However, does P3 have anything better than P6 as well as MS Project?

I think P3 is still the most popular and quite a powerful software with planners due to its simplicity to intall and use. MS Project is also very popular. P6 is yet to catch on. Why?

Thanks and Best Regards,
Arjun Thomas

Hi, Abdou.

I downloaded a long matrix from Primavera that outlines the differences and improvements in P6 over P3. If you send me your email, I will be happy to forward the document.

And P6 is ever so much better - easier to use and more powerful.

I want to add some more since I’m using both versions,
P6 interface is user friendly and very much pratical to use. P6 is a multi project multi user software with outstanding security capabilities, ie you can assign whaty each user can view and edit. P6 uses database, projects share common resources, calendars, codes etc...In P6 you can add a hierarchy for your projects and open, edit and analyze one, two, or even all your projects at the same time. You can add a hierarchy for your organization and assign responsibilities to projects, WBSs and activities. A lot of features exist in P6 like "claim digger" which compares two plans and delivers a very useful report. A lot of attributes are introduced to P6 like "physical percent complete" which measures completion according to one’s perspective and has no effect on actual qtys...what else...in summary, p6 is completely different and i highly recommend it.
