Elevated Watercourse
Modification of an existing 6 m high elevated canal. Normal canal is 12 m in width, to allow single passing on bridge/aqueduct structures, a 5.5 m minimum width is required. Normal depth of water is 1.3 m.
Some 4 number "V" shaped piers on 1,200 mm bored piles, each 20m deep, supported a central span of 40 m with 17 m elevated "run on" section between the piers and ground abutments.
Overall length 75 m and 5.5 m wide water course and 3.5 m footways on each side. Clay dams were installed at each end, canal was drained (fish removed !) with some 35,000 m3 of excavation removed.
