Professional Development for Project Controls

Professioanl development for projects controls specailists is a tricky areas with very little on offer. Project managers seem to have a wide range of choice including PRINCE2 and APMP in the UK and PMP Certification for those in the international market. But the options are very limited for project controls professionals beyond the basic software training. In this artical we will review the current state of play with certification routes for project control professionals.

PMI’s Scheduling Professional (PMI-SP)®

One of the few project secheduling qualifications if the PMI Scheduling Professional qualification from the PMI. This is mirrored on the PMP quaification and has a similar structre with a requirement for prior expereince and a miltiple choice test. Some organisations such as Network Rail have adopted this a the standard for professioal planners. It will be interesting if they start to specify this requierments for other planners in the supply chain. This could have a dramatic effect on the standerds of planning the the UK rail industry. With the PMI backing this qualification could easily become the globale standard for professional planners.

NVQ in Project Controls

This is a profrolio drive route based on developed by the ACOSTE. However the take up has been very slow with very few organisations adopting the standard.
