I totally agree with you as you mentioned in last line.

Both certifications are widely acceptable.
PMP is based upon an American Body of Knowledge and therefore as youd expect, it is more widely recognised in the USA.
APM certification is based on a more European Body of Knowledge and so it is more recognised in Europe.
Both cover the same general areas of PM but use different acronyms and wording.
I personally think there is no benefit of choosing one over the other.
