Training for PMO Professionals - suggestions?

In my experience, people who have successful PMO careers have a broad skills base. They are generalists who have skills that bridge the gap between project and operations; finance and creative; orators and the industrious. But when it comes to the types of training PMO professionals seek out, it always seems to be depressingly narrow.

Self-development in the planning field

D
Dmitry R 👤 Member for 11 years 2 months

Dear colleagues,

Here are my considerations.

Working as a planning specialist in a construction project (oil&gas) for several years i'm starting to notice that from year to year there remains less new information and so it's getting more boring. Most of books and resources offer the same old things - CPM, critical chain, various hints for primavera (which are more interface of the particular software than planning issues).

Planner required - Costain, Dover

Dear All,

My name is Nahum Evans and I am responsible for the recruitment for our Rail Sector here at Costain. We are a Tier 1 contractor and leading engineering solutions provider operating within the Transportation, Water and Energy sectors in the UK.

As those local to Dover (and perhaps further afield) may know, over Christmas, part of the sea wall at Dover along the railway line collapsed and we have been given the emergency repair works to undertake as we are already delivering works in the Kent Region.

What is the difference between Planner, Project Planner and Planning Engineer?

Y
Yasine Ali 👤 Member for 10 years 9 months

Hi everyone,

As the title suggests what are the differences between these roles?

At the moment my title is Assistant Planner.

I produce both strategic and operational programmes to project requirements and also monitor/ analyse the project/ work with Project managers/ Site visits etc. Recently I have started progressing projects in terms of money and how much is owed based on percentages.

Career in Al Baraka Oman

I am currenly pursuing a leading role in L&T in Integrated Project Planning of around 100-300 million $ EPC projects in India. How good would be a opportunity to pursue the same role in Al Baraka Oman. Is the company good? Learning is good?

Or a jump from a EPC giant to a smaller firm like Al Baraka would be a good option

Your comments please.

Career trends in planning and controls

Hi all,

So I have been working in project management for the last 20 years and planning specifically for the last 8. I have moved into project controls over the last 4 years and I am wrapping up an MBA at the end of this year.

South Africa is feeling the bite in the job market and I am wondering what your opinions are on future career trends for planners and controls personnel. I have considered studying a Phd but I am not sure that it will necessarily add value.

Interested to hear your opinions.
