4D Planning Software

Afternoon all,

Looking for a bit of advice regarding 4d planning software, Not sure what thread to put this is.

I am a  construction planner currently working for a tier 1 Contractor in the UK , we are looking to use a current project as an exemplar to see what BIM software we can use and the benefits we can get out of it.

Whatever software is deemed successful/useful we would then look to roll it out company wide for all future projects.

Why not give Contractors the "Engineers Schedule" as a starting point on complicated projects?

An engineer does a complicated 15 -20 page schedule that they have worked on for a year as part of the design documents.  Then the contractor wins the project and has 60 days to start from scratch to produce a better one - this makes no sense, it is just re-inventing the wheel.  I realize there are some "means & methods & legal" issues but it is a massive waste of time when that same time coould be spent further progressing the existing schedule and making it better.  Engineer's version of the construction schedule are generally better - based on the fact that they ha

the MS Excel schedule template you have seen? EASY ONES & COOL ONES

Excel Schedules have their uses.  (I am a 33 year P3/P6 user also)  What is the best one we can get a copy of that you have seen? - price not being an issue either.  For example from the MS template database etc.  CATEGORY 1 - EASY FOR CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDANTS COULD USE.  CATEGORY 2 - SLICK/COOLEST, DIFFICULTY NOT AN ISSUE.  (can even include smartsheets etc, but i would think excel could beat it, maybe not?)

"Received for Record" - does this mean neither approved or rejected so contractor can get paid?

"Received for Record" - does this mean neither approved or rejected so contractor can get paid? - And leave the owner more time to negotiate issues with the contractor without holding up payment?  Do you see this much more now?

delay claims that push into winter - does the party responsible have to pay for the Winter Ripple effect also?

delay claims that push into winter - does the party responsible have to pay for the Winter Ripple effect also?  For example, with a bridge deck - original pour in October, owner delay causes pour in November, the deck requires a coating that has a spec requireing 50 degrees and rising - which will not be until Spring, so does the owner have to pay "delay costs, ie overhead" the 3-4 winter months also?  I assume in hot locations mayber there is a "not summer" equivalaent - I have mainly worked in cold climates.

Preferred Percentage Complete type and best for overall Roll up percentage

Good evening,

I've been using Primavera P6 off and on, but now I've gone through two training courses and I am still a bit unsure of which percent complete type to utilize. Whilst I understand how Physical % complete works, it does not produce a roll up.

The master scheduler from my previous project (Gas-To-Liquids Plant refurbishment) always stood by the units % complete on the basis of being able to illustrate a roll up summary percentage complete to clients/investors etc.

The issue I've had with these types is this;
