Actual Costs in P6 - EV Nirvana??

After a number of years working in Project Controls, and several organisations, I can get my head around Planning and Resources but what i see constant in-fighting, division and confusion around is just how Actual Costs and how actual costs are aligned to the Schedule and with figures from Finance/Cost Control (and the age old Cost Control vs Earned Value/Schedule and Cost misalignment has happened in every organisation I've encountered). So my question to the good people of Planning Planet is this:

Stand alone cost tools - looking for suggestions

Always been in scheduling.  Been in and out of cost, getting back into cost.  There have got to be better tools out there than just excel - what are better ones for cost?  For example, I don't want a "whole" system like procore because already using some tools like E-Builder which is ok for workflow but I am thinking I can find something more evolved on cost.  For example, I like the long history of Deltek Cobra with P6 but I don't need Earned Value, not required.  I have been on EV projects, but most projects use negotiated SOV schedule of values - informed by the

Citrix implemented p6 - I can't assign another project as a baseline & can't figure out why - any ideas?

Here is what I think it has to do with - the default setting for each project is "shared".  I change it to exclusive it to exclusive and open it.  But when I close and look at it again all the files default back to shared.  My guess is that P6 is not letting you make a shared file a baseline.  I have no way to keep it exclusive - is this a citrix thing?  is this a admin thing.  I have used P6 for 30 thirty at 25 different places but am new on this setup.  I am not an admin person.  Any ideas?

Customising different column headers for different projects

I am managing two different projects for different clients in P6 that require the schedules to be published every week.  The clients require different column headers and so far I have had to keep changing the headers when I go to publish each project.  Does anyone know of a way of saving the customised headers to be specific per project?

Imported Project Without Baseline

Hi,

I have imported a file without its baseline. But I see baseline start/finishes dates are different than project start/finish dates. I checked there is no assigned baseline. I expect if there is no baseline assigned to the project then baseline dates should be equal to project dates.

Could you please explain ?

Integrating Supplier Schedules - Microsoft Project (Supplier Schedule) to P6 (Project Schedule)

Has anyone incorporated a Supplier Schedule (From Microsoft Project) from a supplier, to monitor their performance and Earned Value, into their Project's P6 Schedule?

Is there any tips or information, UDFs, consistency advice across formats and general tips on integrating and measuring supplier performance that anyone can provide?

What do you NOT want in you P6 schedule & how many activities can you update per day?

I am starting to think that what makes a great schedule is what you don't put in it - what should you leave out?  for example: 

P6 schedule make a bad, redundant Submittals log (why do it twice) P6 should just have the dates from the log that effect deliverables.  (NOT SAYING DON'T HAVE A SUMMARY ACTIVITY(S) FOR A SUBMITTAL - BUT P6 IS NOT GOOD A PARTIAL APPROVALS & NUANCE ETC LIKE EXCEL)

Duration and Hours - Minutes

Hello All,

 

How would you represent Duration and Hours in Minutes.

 

If you want the duration to be 15 minutes what would we type it in hours 0.15H or the duration is 45 min = 0.45H

 

If we want a resource to work 1/2 an hour would we type 0.30H or if a resource is working for 45 min = 0.45H

 

A little confusing.

Activityy Usage Spreadsheet and resource assignments view

Is there a way to adjust the field size or font size to make the values readable in this view. The only time I can read the values is when i set the time scale to days.

I want to see what I have and make adjustments before i move it over to Excel.
