Resource Modelling

Hi all,

I work for a groundwork’s sub-contractor and looking to advance our overall planning capability. Use of Asta has been basic up to now. I have started to resource load our programmes and model based on outputs per hour to generate the duration on individual tasks. Really, just playing with the software “learn as you go” to get to this point.

A couple of questions from doing this first time around;

1. Is it possible to create a standard task library with resources pre loaded with the outputs etc. (gangs) that could be dragged and dropped onto tasks so we are not repeating the same on every new project. Say excavating and installing 110mm drainage for example.

2. Is there a function which can work out the resourcing of the project based on a constraint on either labour/plant cost or hours? I.e if we have 100 machine hours priced, constraining the project so the plan does not extend beyond that - or if it does, something flags the issue?

Many thanks for any assistance

For Point 1 - You can create task pools that can include the resource numbers you require for a specific task. You can also create Allocation Groups that you can assign from the Project View on to any task of your choice. This would be the gangs that you are after and can be made up of multiple resources.

I'm not familiar with Asta Powerproject, but most tools allow you to import schedule logic.  What I've done in the past is create a library of small subnets (frag-nets) of activities that are regularly used (in my case elements of typical high rise construction such as jacking the lift core or fitting out a toilet block).  The activities in the subnet had all of the codes, resources, typical durations, etc. copy the library into a new file to edit and tweak to the project then copy the project specific 'prototype' into the main project file 25 times for a 25 story building, updating the task number to separate the floors - bulk edit the level code and link the floors then onto the next element..........   Careful though about numbers and codes saves days of work and the subnet templates help avoid errors.

With reference to point 2 in your question - ignore the guess in the estimate! Your job is first to build a realistic and achievable schedule, then kook at what others think and identify the reasons for different assumptions - then involve management. There is no point in creating an unachievable schedule: https://mosaicprojects.com.au/shop-easy-cpm.php
