Dear All
I need some explanation on manhours calculation for resource loading for p6 and MSp
As for my understanding, in p6 the manohurs is called - Budgeted Labor Unit
And for MSp it is called work hour
Quest 1 - Is my understading correct for the above?
Before we come out with the manhours for each activity in the schedule. we must have the productivity for each activity.
Production rate = Qty / unit time
Productivity = manhours / production rate
Estimated manhours = productivity * material qty
Quest 2- Is the above formula correct?
Thank u so much for the detail Mr Rodel Marasigan
When you add shifts with different crews and different production rates it gets a bit complicated for manual scheduling.
As far as I recall P6 does not have productivity(volume of work per hour) field, multi-resources, nor resource quantity(ea) so you will have to figure out activity duration and for each resource calculate resource units or effort hours.
The basic formulas would be:
activity duration(hrs) = volume of work / volume per hour
units for each reasource = Resource Quantity(ea) x Workload x Duration(hrs)
Thank u Mr Davila.
But are there Productivity in Activity Type in P6?
Most work is done by many members of different skills working as a team/crew. You need to distribute the total man-hours among each of the resource skill. Easy if you know the volume of work, the production rate of your crew and the crew composition. At home, estimators and experienced Project Managers are good at this, they use the company records for their estimates and for tasks they have no record they use references such as RS Means.
RS Means Basic Calculations
If production type, enter the volume of work, select the crew and the production rate and the software will determine the activity duration, if duration type duration is fixed. When using multi-resources the whole crew is assigned; resource quantity for each resource and their workload if part-time and everything else is done by the software, transparent and so easy. I expect P6 to be a bit different but as easy.
Hi Suhaila,
P6 Resources:
1) Labor = Unit (hours)
2) Non-Labor (equipment) = Unit (hours)
3) Material = qty (per unit of measure)
MSProject
1) Work = Type: Work = Hours (labor or equipment)
2) Work = Type: Material = qty (per Material Label or unit of measure in P6)
3) Work = Type: Cost = Cost (expenses in P6)
Input for each Resources and Resources Type:

Depends on the settings of Activity Duration Type:
1) Fixed Duration & Units = Direct input on the Resources Tab - Budgeted Unit (Budget hours/ qty on the task or activity) the duration will not change. Duration Change - Budgeted Unit will not change. Remaining Unit/time - variable and changing based on the input duration or units (Remaining Unit/Time = Budgeted Unit/ Duration).
2) Fixed Duration and Units/Time = Direct input on the Resources Tab - Budget Unit (Budget hours/qty on the task or activity) the duration will not change. Duration Change - Budgeted Unit will change - become variable and changing based on input. Raimaining Unit/time change - budgeted unit will change, duration will not change (Budget Unit = Duration * Remaining Unit/Time).
3) Fixed Units = Direct input on the Resources Tab - Budget Unit (Budget hours/qty on the task or activity) the duration will change. Duration Change - Budgeted Unit will not change. Remaining Unit Change - Duration Change (Budgeted Unit / Ramaining Unit/Time).
4) Fixed Unit/Time = Direct input on the Resources Tab - Budget Unit (Budget hours/qty on the task or activity) the duration will change. Duration change - Budget Unit Change. Remaining Unit/Time change - Duration will change.(Bugeted Unit / Remaining Unit/Time)
