New Primavera 17.12.1 set-up with SQL 2014

Hi all,

I am installing Primavera PPM V17.12.1 with SQL 2014 Express database on our company server.

Q1: Is this a workable longterm solution. Will the Express SQL DB be able to handle a large program of projects over the long term?

Q2: Any specific issues users have found in setting this up?

Q3: Bandwidth requirements?

Thank you for any relevant responses.

Zoltan,

The original post related to the Express version, so all comments were based only on the Express Edition of SQL Server.

The data limits you have mentioned are for the Full SQL Server Versions.

Agree that only Express is limited to 10 GB, but this is higher than the original 4 GB limit on the express editions up to SQL Server Express 2008.

10 gig is only for express not the full blown express look at the standard column

Maximum memory utilized (per instance of SQL Server Database Engine) standard 128 Gig

Maximum memory utilized (per instance of Analysis Services) 64 gig

Maximum memory utilized (per instance of Reporting Services) 64 gig

Maximum relational Database size 524 PB

Zoltan,

The 4GB database size was for the 2008 version. The 2008R2 onwards had the total database size increased to 10GB.

Think the RAM limit of 1GB would be far more limiting in a multiuser setup.

Agree that the full blown SQL Server would be required.

Thank you Steve, will discuss with our IT and see what our options are. Should have full SQL licenses. Bandwith has been a definite issue on previous projects as the lag time it introduces is very frustrating.

Morné,

It depends on how large & how many projects you are looking at having in the database at the same time & how many concurrent users you have.

The express version is limited to a maximum of 10GB for the database size and is limited in the amount of RAM it can use (1GB) & CPU / Cores limits.

Bandwidth may be an issue if you have large numbers of Global codes when you need to open all codes - I have seem Primavera using a high amount of desktop RAM (3.5 GB) which all is fed over the network, so if you are dealing with really large projects then it may be an issue.
