Hii every body!!!
i want to create a new projet on P6 but i have un probleme: i want to know how to make activity automatically started only when one between 3 ressources is available?
For exemple:
I have 3 teams: T1, T2 and T3.
I have 5 activities whith duration in brackets : A1 (3days), A2(3d), A3(3d), A4(4d) ,A5 (2d).
To A1 i assign T1. one day after start A1 i start A2 with T2. One day after A2, i start A3 with T3.
I notice now that i don't have any team available so i want that if i plan A4 starting at the same day with A3, P6 should refuse and tell me that i can only start it the next day (at the end of A1 when T1 would be available).
If there is 1 team available, P6 automacally assign that team to the activity.
If there is 2 teams, P6 presents those two teams and i select one of them.
same thing for 3 teams.
Thank you for your answes.
Hi,
So you are looking for resource levelling; there are better simulation softwares to do this than P6 but if u want P6 then one of the ways can as follows:
1. Dont name three teams; name as one resoruce name i.e. Compaction crew.
2. Allocate the same reources to all three relevent activities.
3. Make a UDF 'Priorty' and select under the Levelling Priorty.

Thank you for your replies guys!!!!
It's OK!!!! :)
If you mean automatic replacement of resources having the same skill it can be done but I do not believe P6 is very functional in this regard.
In the following example T1, T2 and T3 share the same skill and are assigned to the activity as soon as one is available based on some priority rule, can be a sequential order or team productivity. But it is more interesting when the replacement is among similar skills but different production rates, in such case if a higher productivity team is selected the activity duration is adjusted accordingly.
A skill component can be a multi-resource such as the case when one resource is replaced by two resources, of course I would expect the two as a team will have somewhat higher productivity than a team of one and therefore the nedd to be able to take into account the team production rates.
P6 provides a functionality called Roles, but I understand it cannot substitute multi-resources and consider team productivity. I do not know what other limitations are there but the following link might help.

Good Luck.
Hello Frank,
I would think of any project like a real life situation, where you may need to share resources among several activities, furthermore, you may like to execute all those activities around the same time. However, practically speaking it may not be possible:
Example:
Resource R1 is needed for Activity A1 (Obtain 5-day training on one-on-one basis which can be scheduled according to the availability of R1). R1 is also needed during the same duration for Activity A2 (Create a conceptual drawing for a parking lot). Now both of the activities you want to schedule together, both activities have 5 days duration, and independent of each other but the fact is that R1 will be busy on training (Activity A1) during first five days, as such will not be available for Activity A2 during this period. So as a result, You would decide which activity has priority on the other and schedule them accordingly.
P6 Solution:
Once priorities are decided, you can tell P6, which activity will take priority. Also you will make both activities Resource dependent type. Now when you will run schedule, P6 will schedule the activities according to the priorities you have set, the activity with higher priority will be scheduled before the other. In some cases (specially where more than just two activities are involved) you can use resource levelling function after assigning priorities.
I hope it will be useful.
