Subcontractors as resource

Please help...

So I went ahead and set up all of my activities with dates, predecessors, successors etc for a project which is a construction contract where I have some of the work that is self performed, some where I have vendors providing materials, and subcontractors who have provided me their quotes. Next, I set up all of the vendors and subcontractors as resources. I would like to know if there is a way to load the costs (quotes) from each subcontractor into the activities they each perform.

For example:

Subcontractor A - Quote Amount: $900,000

Activity A - 12 days

Activity B - 12 days

Activity C - 26 days

Activity A should be only 20 percent of the total quote.

Activity B 25%.

Activity C 55% of the total dollar value.

I am stuck at how to proceed. Please help...

Thank you,

Eddie

Eddie,

The simplest way to do in P6 is to make use of the different rate types. In P6 You can define 5 rate types for every resource.
in your example 3 rate types shall be used. Each rate type shall be assigned to different activities with the same resource.

hope this will help.

Hope the following links helps.

Take a look at scenario 2 and learn how to make use of cost accounts, they provide for more detailed cost reports. I use cost accounts as well as cost centers but I doubt P6 have cost centers for wich you migh need period performance reports.

I do not use P6 but frequently must import P6 schedules into the software I use. I still find it weird the need to create a dummy resource just to manage/track costs instead of being able to assign it directly to the activity as well as to any resource type.

Costs Codes shall be used for cost loading activities as well as for any resource type, if P6 requires the creation of a material type resource then let it be but remember that cost codes provide for extra details. Anyway I understand in P6 Material Resources are not leveled, if so then you shall have no issues.

Good Luck,

Rafael

PS - Just a hint for leveling subcontractor works: In my example I used partial workloads as to level how many activities the Subcontrator can handle at the same time, at 50% workload he can handle only two activities. Subcontrator crews usually consists of same trade resources and using partial assignments is good enough for most subcontracts.

And here is the way I've done it so far, though I'm not sure I'm correct but it works. I set the subcontractor as a resource of "Material" type. Next, I took the subcontractor's quote and divided it by 100 to get a 1% value which in the example would be $9000. I entered it into the Price / Unit of the respective resource. I also went ahead and entered the Default Units / Time as 0/d and Max Units / Time as 0d. In the Activities for Activity A in the properties with "Resources" tab I went to the Budgeted Units and entered 20. In Activity B 25, and Activity C 55. The values all add up correctly and everything looks great. But I'm not sure it is correct because it is not logically intuitive the way I did it.

If anyone has a different way, or a correct way, I'd be very happy to give it a go.

Thank you,

Eddie
