WBS Level Conversion

I am working in a Project (Owner's rep.) where I have to create level 3 schedule from detailed level 4 schedule. What i do is to use work package WBS level as activities in my level 3 schedule.I tried exporting these level 4 activities to excel and copy the work package level wbs as activities to appropriate level 3 WBS. Then I sequence based on level 4 sequence. But i wasn't able to see these work packages in organised way after exporting to excel. Hence, i have to type every activity in level 3 schedule.

Is there any simplier way to convert level 4 schedule to level 3?

Paul,

There are easy steps you can apply to convert level 4 activities into level3.

1. In the WBS pane select level 3 WBS then drag and drop it into level 1 WBS.
2. In the activity pane select all activities within the level 3 WBS then drag and drop into level 2 WBS.
3. Use excel export/import through SDK.

Hi Zoltan;Mike;Johannes & Vladimir,

Thanks for your replies.

The level 4 schedules I have are actually from our contractors. My integrated schedule is the level 3 schedule i'm creating. I add each contractor schedule in appropriate parent WBS and link interfaces in my level 3.

One easy so;ution: export Level 4 schedule to Spider, do it there and export level 3 schedule back to P6. But I expect that you do not have Spider Project, so let's wait for other proposals.

Hi Paul

Seems a strange question. However if this is what is required then suggest to proceed as follows. I understand that the duration of the WBS level 3 shall be de duration of the child activities. Insert an new activity between level 2 and level 3. Make the duration of the activity equal to the duration of the child activities. Then somehow constrain the new activity so that is stays in place with logic or soft constrains. Then delete the level 4 WBS level in the WBS structure.

Regards

Johannes.

P.S. Raymond de Laza knows an better solution?

Hi Zoltan

If you delete the level 4 activities you will wipe out the entire project.

why not delete the level 4 activities ? and what you will be left with is a level 3 schedule you might have to use dissolve for the deletion of some activities
