S-Curve on P6

Hi There,

Please advise if we can generate an S-curve on P6 without any resources and cost on the activities. I've been trying to do this but it seems that the software cannot do it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi Danang,

Primavera cannot generate S-Curve without one of the following you had mentioned. The curve is basically should come from your resources (labor, equipment, and materials) as well as cost. It needs a value, cost or rate in order to create or produce the curve even in any other software like MS Excel.

I suggest creating a workaround is the best solution to your problem. If so then please follow the following steps:

1. Create a new resource and rename it “Budgeted Time or Project Duration”.  Under the Resource Type select the “Labor” or “Nonlabor”, it’s up to you, depending on your requirements.

2. Under the resource details --> Details, Default Units/Time change the 8h/d to 1h/d or go to Edit Menu --> User Preferences… under Time Units --> Unit Format, change Hour to Day.

3. Go to Project Menu --> highlight your currently open Project, then click “Details” to show bottom layout or Project Details, select the Resources tab, uncheck the “Resources can be assigned to the same activity more than once”.

4. Now, go to Activities window --> select Filter, try to filter whatever activities you wanted to allocate your newly created resource (Budgeted Time or Project Duration). Say for example you want only to load a resource for all the construction activities or whatever, it’s up to you. The parameters of your filter should look like this:

Where:

4.1 Activity Type equals “Task Dependent”

4.2 WBS is under “Construction”

5. After filtering the activities, go to View Menu --> Column --> Customize, the following must be shown on the Column:

5.1   Activity ID

5.2   Activity Name

5.3   Resources

5.4   Budgeted Labor Units

5.5   Original Duration

5.6   So on and so forth, if you want to add more…,

6. Click the first activity under the Resources column, and it shows the dialogue box “Assign Resources”. Select the resource name “Budgeted Time or Project Duration”.

7. Now, select the first activity with resource assigned in it, scroll down up to the last activity, then hit first the “Shift” on your keyboard and select the last activity.

8. When done, go to Edit Menu --> select “Fill Down” or “Ctrl + E” on your keyboard. Now you have the value of your Budgeted Labor Units similar to Original Duration.

9. Go to Project Menu --> Resource Assignments and hit “Ctrl +A” or “Select All” and then right click select “Delete”.

10. When prompted with the message box, “Are you sure you want to delete the selected resource assignment(s)? select “Yes”.

11. Again a Confirmation message box will appear on your screen, “All labor resources have been deleted on this activity. Do you want to reset labor units to zero on this activity?” select “No” be careful with this dialogue box.

12. When done, go to Activities windows, and you will notice that your Resources column has been deleted however, the value of your Budgeted Labor Units are still there.

13. This time, go to View Menu --> Show on Bottom à Activity Usage Profile.

14. In Activity Usage profile Options, under Data, select the Units radio button and then Labor and select OK.

At this point, you have generated the S-Curve without any resources or cost assign to each activity. If you find difficulties I can email you the steps with screen shots for easy reference, though this step is only intended to ALL my P6 students, I would be happy to share to others if needed.

I hope the above steps will assist you.

Cheers,

Arnold
