impact analysis using P6

Dear all,

My project is reaching 72.20% this week(data date 21-Dec-2012). and our contract project Mechanical Completion date is 30-Apr-2013. now, we are ahead of schedule(bl Cum 65.53%). however, there are some problems:

for many Procurement items, Procurement department keeps changing the forecast Delivary/SAT dates, which definately gonna have a huge negatice impact on our Mechanical Completion date. My supervisor asked me to put the newly forecast Procurement Delivery date into my Actual Schedule(datadate: 21-dec-2012) and to see if the new date pushed the Mechanical Complete date forward, if it does, then we reject the date;if it doesn't, then we accept it.



I said OK (at the bottom of the food chain, you have to do whatever they ask.). then i input the new procurement forecast dates(eg, 15-Feb-2013 for delivery of VESDA) as actual date in P6, then Press F9. after several updates like this, the mechanical complete date did not move at all (still 31-Apr-2013). My boss is very content with this. but i began to doubt about the method, then i input 3-May-2013 for one item and turned out, unsurprisingly, the mechanical complete date did not move at all(still 30-Apr-2013).

i just informed my boss about this, and his jaw dropped. So i need your guys help, have you encounted this and how to solve this problem?

After Setting the forcasted dates from procurement team, apply constraint then F9.

Ramound,

yes, my procurement equipment Delivery/SAT linked with Construction activities eg, Cooling tower installation. Is it just feasible for me to do it like this: disply the Finish Field and only type in the forecast date submitted by Procurement guys, then F9 to see the impact on my Mechanical Completion date.

is this a good practice?

Justin,

Your Boss is simply saying to reflect the Forecasted close to reality Dates of those long lead items.
For example, the Chillers, AHU's, etc... get the approximate availability at site dates of these equipment from your supplier.


In your schedule add a finish milestone activity (Chiller availability at Site) under your procurement WBS, apply a constraint "Finish on or After" with the date provided by the supplier. Link this activity to the construction activity named "Installation of Chillers", press F9 and see if the schedule moved.

Hi!        

        Create first a reflection of your project to play the “what if scenario analysis’’. At first reflect the forecasted date of materials delivery using constrained date. Be sure to review the logic of your network diagram that successor activities link to delivery (relationship of its activity) and remove those unnecessary dependence's.

Hi Justin

It seems that there is something fundamentally wrong with the logic in the programme.

Check the successors to the procurement dates - especialy if they have any negative lags - or even if there are any at all.

In Asta PowerProject you can switch categorised links on and off for "what if" scenarios - maybe there is a similar system in P6.

To play with delivery dates use Start No Earlier Than constraints instead of entering actual dates that is wrong.

If delivery activities are linked with activities that consume the materials the schedule will move,

If these links do not exist the schedule will not move because P6 does not level material resources.

Justin,

Actual Dates shall not be beyond the Data Date, they shall be behind Data Date.

Suggest to use a "What if" with a constrainted milestone for the availability of material at site link to construction activity.
