About tracking and updating progress of a project

Dear all,

I'd like to know the right precedure of updating a schedule, Is the following steps of updating a schedule right or not?

"Input actual progress data(including of actual start ,actual finish, remaining duration and so on )"----"apply actuals"----"schedule(F9)"------"store period performance" .

Is "store period performance" the last step or "schedule(F9)" the last step? I saw both of them in another forum. can anyone help me regarding this ?  Thanks in advance.

Shiguo,

When you use the P6 tool, “Apply Actuals”, you will erase your actual progress data in favor of meeting your Planned Dates.  This could even mean that your Actual Finish dates would be erased and new dates put in its place.  If actual status is important to you (or even just being able to properly forecast project completion), then never use the Apply Actuals tool.

Secondly, Scheduling (F9) is an iterative process; first you update, re-schedule, then evaluate if the resulting schedule makes sense to you.  If you spot something that does not match reality, then you should further update the schedule, re-schedule, and re-evaluate.

Only when you are happy with your results and believe that the schedule now properly reflects the current project’s status do you store period performance.  Good luck!
