Hi everyone,

I need your help, i have recently joined a new company, today i came across a query from senior management that there is a project which started 1 year ago, in the intial it was a project of 700 days, after weeks and months the client put the variations in the actual work, such as sometimes deleting the old activities and soetimes adding the new activities, and hence the project got different shape every time.

The previous planner made the programs in MS project and everytime when any variations occured he simply saved the old file and started the new file with the saved as version of old one (means everytime he got a single line variation and everytime he created a new file.

Now the management asked me to develop the program in P6, combine all the variations and should show the the impact of delays,

Now please help me how to proceed and what to do? ( i am in a total panic)

regards,

Kashif

Since the management tasked you to develope the programme in P6, try to create a P6 baseline by your own, reviewing any invalid relationships, resources, activities, durations. When you satisfy yourself that is a baseline that represents your project original scope and contractual requirements, present it your management, for refinements; incorpore comments.

After you have your P6 baseline, then you can proceed with the variation orders, maybe thru a consolidated approach, or by individual VOs.

I would just use the MS project programme done by the previous planner for reference. It would not be prudent, I think, to just export/import the previous file. Know the project documents, and do some research.

Dear Kashif,

To the best of my knowledge and experties , I suggest following ,

1.Import the first  and last MS Proejct files into P6 separately.

2.Assign original schedule to last schedule as a baseline.

3. Add following columns ,

  3.1 Variance BL-Proejct Duration

3.2 Variance BL Project Start Date

  3.3 Variance-BL Project finish Date

I believe you will have better idea how to proceed ahead.

You can send the first and last schedules to me at [email protected] to advise you better. I will practice suggested actions and let you know how they work.

Imran Asghar
