Hi kp,
Firstly I would suggest you make a copy of the Gantt Chart view for this, (View > More Views > Gantt Chart > Copy) and then use this view to change your Bar Styles (Format > Bar Styles).
In the Bar Styles Dialog Box find the Progress row and change ‘CompleteThrough’ in the To column to ‘Physical % Complete’.
When now you manually enter values in the Physical % Complete column in your Table it should be shown as a progress line on the Gantt Chart. Please be aware that Physical % Complete will only show at Task level and does not roll up to Summary Task level.
Your second question is a little trickier to answer as I don’t know how you update MS Project. I generally update schedules using Actual and Remaining Duration/Work, and don’t enter values against % Complete.
Does the Task ‘Split’ when you enter your % Complete? If it does then you may want to uncheck the ‘Split in progress tasks’ option (Tools > Options > Schedule).
It may also be related to a Calculation Option you have selected. Try unchecking the ‘Move end of / start of completed / remaining parts’ option (Tools > Options > Calculation).
Hopefully this will solve your problem, if it does remember to click the ‘Set as Default’ button on each of those tabs before you close down MS Project, or the problem might reappear when you open another file.
