Hi,
Does anyone have any rules of thumb for tree clearance? I need to re-locate 1800 ish trees from one part of the desert to another. They are currently growing in sand.
Many thanks
Simon

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the advice. Yes, they are various types of palm trees, some are protected which is why we are transplaning the job lot.
Cheers

Hi Simon
I assume they are palm trees.
A lot depends on how big they are - if say between 4 and 6 metres it is possible to hand dig around the root bowl - usually a spherical shape 1 to 1.5 m diameter - and carefully lift out the tree and lay flat.
Immediately tightly wrap the root bowl in two or three layers of wet hessian and tie tightly.
They must be transported and replanted within two or three days and make sure they are well braced in their new position until the new root bowl has established itself - don't forget to take the wrapping off.
Anything bigger and you will probably need specialist lifting equipment and slings - but its the same principle.
Amazing what a common builder knows about really.
Best regards
