P6 Updating schedule problem

Kindly note that I have a project with more than 100 activities with fixed duration & units and different relations with the following dates as example:

  • Activity #1 planned start= 05-dec-10 and planned Finish = 30-dec-10
  • Activity #2 planned start= 23-dec-10 and planned Finish = 16-jan-11

And after I updated Activities #1 & 2 by choosing new data date 12-jan-11, selected activity only and based on activity duration type or always recalculate I found the following:

  • Activity #1 Actual start= 05-dec-10A & actual Finish = 30-dec-10A
  • Activity #2 Actual start= 23-dec-10A & planned Finish = 05-Feb-11 instead of 16-jan-11

I wonder why please clarify the correct steps to update schedule

Hi,

Dear Abeer please check % completed and remaining duration.

If you have given only start date to activity 2 as 23-Dec-10 and not given any % complete or remaining duration, what P6 does is add remaining duration to data date and gives end date.

Calculations = 16-Jan-11 - 23-Dec-10 = 24 days assuming 7 days working calender.

so planned finished date = new data date (12-Jan-11) + 24 days = 05-Feb-11.

It is must while updating to put actual start date, % complete or remaining duration to get accurate result from P6.

I hope this solves your problem.

What Dear Reymund suggested is also right check that alslo.

Hi,

You mentioned that you updated selected activities only. There might be another activity that precedes Activity # 2 which is causing to drive the remaining duration.

I hope this find the solution.
