What you are asking is not uncommon, I use Spider Project and the issue is handled very efficient with the use of multiple WBS so the different organization methods can be compatible with Portfolio views, better than just layouts in a portfolio environment. You can switch WBS at a drop down menu from the toolbar.
We generally use two WBS of our own, one by Area/Function and another by Responsibility, for the Owner we use whatever he wants, if a single WBS no problem, if a few, no problem, if a hundred, the software can handle it but that is too much.
Perhaps this is what you should be asking for.
By the way "Configurations" is the Spider term for "Layouts".

Yes thnak you for your reply, I have a convention as i use the layout name in the tittle block as well, but with several clients, multiple projects and different layouts it works to a certain extent. It be just a great software improvement if the Structure could be available.

The layouts can be saved as Project layouts" of course, then it just comes down to some sort of numbering convention to group and sort the layouts.
I use R in the name for resource layouts, A for activity ones, P for progress and so on.
As long as you document it then others will know what they should look for.
