Multiple Windows

Sharef,

P6 use top & bottom panel. You can use top for another project and bottom for another project for comparison.

If you need to compare different projects/portfolios from different countries or locations it is possible as long at it sits on the same database otherwise it need to import first before you can open both at the same time.

If you really keen to open both database at the same time that was already solve by the modern technology which was also queried by us. The solution made was using Citrix Metaframe presentation server. P6 must have multiple licenses in order to gain access for multiple databases with multiple users. Multiple licenses will not need if single user only for each database (different license for each database). One database will be open on a PC and another database opened using Citrix accessing other locations or countries.

If using standalone you have to use virtual application to have 2 systems running together on a different window. (Note: must have at least 2 licenses minimum to gain access)

Shareef,

Your needs are very common and we do what you suggest, opening two versions on different windows. Every time I use Spider I open several jobs at the same time on separate windows instead of on a single portfolio. I use the portfolios when I have the need to work on them as such.

At times I want to see side by side different views of the Gantt chart or Pert chart of a single job. As you can see from my prior posting I can display on a Portfolio Window the Gantt for the job named Batch Plant while I can have a different view of the Gantt chart for the same job on a separate window. It is not always about different jobs but about different views of the same job, same version, on different windows side by side. If you have a second monitor connected to your computer this can make it even easier to navigate. But make it even better connect a third monitor to your laptop if your laptop is capable of doing this. There are other options to connect up to 6 extra monitors.

Rafael

You are right Rafael !

Im myself finding this difficult coz there are a lot of situations when we have to compare two or more schedules for example during claim analysis, to compare the result of impact on a particular activity using different methods of impact for different criteria... just to know which way an impact would yield better result. In this case it would be difficult to loacte that particular activity at an instance.

Then again, when we open resources, the whole programme screen is replaced with the resource screen which makes it difficult to see which particular activity and resource we are focussed on.....which means we will have to note it down or have a really good memory or state of mind

International Portfolio

What if I have an International Portfolio of Jobs stored on different databases on different continents, say one Portfolio for Europe, one for North America and another for Latin America. If I want to see the overall financial status how can I take a look at it as a whole?

Multiple windows are not a requirement to see all the jobs within a single portfolio but it is convenient to compare side by side different portfolios stored on different servers, how you do that?

Rafael

Shareef,

There is no multiple windows in P6. You can open multiple projects by selecting the EPS or highlighting multiple projects at the same time. You can shift project to project by expanding and collapsing the node. If you need to close one just collapsed the node and activities will not visible to you.
