Caterpillar, the biggest heavy equipment manufacturer and 4th-largest exporter on the globe, reported record profits Friday. I read more information here: Caterpillar records record $1.22 billion profit for Q1 2011.

Figures point to a $1.22 billion profit, 426 % higher than First quarter last year. Sales increased 57 % to $12.95 billion over the same period. Caterpillar managed to stay in business amidst recession. Cheers!

I do not use production rates for resource modelling.



Even if I wanted to I could not access the PP rates section because I have not introduced enough members.



I extract the resource hours from the cost plan / BOQ and use the total hours to allocate to the tasks.

Your postings about earthwork production rates are the correct way to estimate excavation output. It is not as simple as a single number as posted under PP Rates. PP Rates can be misleading as they miss a big part of the picture. Not only earthwork is interesting but formwork using several methods, especially if unconventional such as slip forming.



Discussion of production rates is a much needed title, we should raise the bar.



I would suggest that when you click at Rates this would get you to a forum for this purposes, where everyone would post production rates and the logic behind it in appropriate threads. It will also relieve some burden on PP Admin.

Excavation output is not determined by the rate of excavation - you can find the listed performance ratings on any manufacturers website.



You have to calculate the haul & disposal rate for the excavated material.



This is a formula based on:



Haul distance

Paylod of haul equipment

Load and tip time

Haul speed KMH



When you have calculated the haul time you can balance the excavation rate by the number of haul units.



Aim to have enough units so that the excavator is working at about 80% capacity.

It depends on the type of soil layers and the equipment that you are using. It is a broad range. I would recommend that you read the soil reports and discuss with your construction team the type of equipment that they are considering.



Subsequently, you can download the charts from the website of the equipment companies and factor in the skilled operators expected productivity.
