MPX-format reflects the status of MS-Project more than 20 years ago. To use this format in general means to loose much information. It’s absolutely ok if you just transfer dates.

Thisw is out of 6.2 Help: "Microsoft Project 2007 support

You can now share project data between P6 6.2 and Microsoft Project 2007 over supported standard Microsoft formats. Although Microsoft retired earlier data formats, it supports XML. P6 6.2 allows for the import and export of data files created in the Microsoft Project XML format. The change to XML removes the earlier requirement of having MS Project installed on the same computer as P6 to share data.

MSP XML format enables projects to be shared between Primavera Project Management and Microsoft Project 2002 and subsequent versions.

MPP format supports the import of project data from Microsoft Project 2002 and 2003.

Import of summary projects and resource-only data to Primavera Project Management is supported in MPP format from Microsoft Project 2002 and 2003.

Continued support of the MPX format enables data to be shared between Primavera Project Management and other third-party applications.

MDB, MPD,and MPT files are no longer supported. " (end of copy)

Which version of P6 and of MSP do you have?

To import mpp-format you need MSP on your computer. This seems to be the reason.
