Hello Darren,
The consolidated view seems like a good idea depending on if I can view the shared resources in a format that allows for thorough analysis. A curve chart would be nice. What I am dealing with is a small number of resources on multiple small cap projects that will fluctuate week to week if I cant get the projects to line up properly.
As far as PMs wanting to update I am the lone ranger. A maximum of 4 possible PMs in the future if Im lucky (or terribly unlucky I cant decide!).
Did I mention Im new at this?
I am doing my best to build a platform and dashboard that I can effectively manage from. As of right now there is next to nothing to go by.

Hi Rob,
Do you want to manage your projects using the summary file or just use it to show a consolidated programme view?
Thinking a little further down the line, how many PMs will want to access a summary file and update progress?

Thanks guys. I am in a new world with these things so it is difficult to get my bearings straight. I did try to simply Insert Project but couldnt get it to do anything. Ive really been too busy to give it the attention it needs. Once I get it set up it will become a daily task to maintain and modify. Ill let you know how it goes after I get a chance to play with it for a while.

By the way this forum is a very nice resource especially for someone with minimal experience like myself.
If you want to manage workforce, I am assuming that you are doing resource planning as well, if so, you can do as Trevor said, and then assign your resources, or alternatively, you can use the share resources function to do the job. Its quite tedious, at least that is what I think.
Start a new project file.
Click Insert menu, Insert Project.
No effort at all.
