I think 6 to 7 levels in the WBS heirarchy is the mininum.

Level 1 - Project wide or project milestone or contractual milestone

Level 2 - Engineering/technical, Procurement, Construction

Level 3 - Breakdown of Construction (sample only): Bridge, Pumping Station, Water Tank, 66kv substation, 11kv substation, service network, roads, retaining wall

Level 4 - Identity of each structure:Bridge 1, 2, 3, 4; Pumping station 1, 2; Water tank A, B; etc. etc.

use the project description to define the identity of each structure.

Level 5 - WBS or breakdown of each structure, for example bridge: earthworks, foundation, substructures, superstructures, appoach slabs, brige roadworks,

do the same WBS or breakdown of each structure

Level 6 Breakdown of each elements identified in level 5 for example: Earthworks: excavation (cut), fill, borrow fill, etc.; foundation: bored pile, etc.; substructure footing, etc.; superstructure: column, pier, etc.

level 7 depends upon the drawings.

Refer to the construction specification institute CSI masterformat to breakdown the structure elements

Kier,

Not all the time we follow the clients. We follow the contract between company and client.

But on the other hand, if you are junior, it is preferable to follow the client because you will work hard to reach the standard of the client, you will learn a lot regarding the ins and out of planning,

as you mature, you will not have this kind of query because at the first instance, you present your baseline schedule, you know you are right and it will be easy for your to explain your work.

I have really no idea if the 700 activities is enough. I dont know what is the project all about (road, bridge, land development, etc), also the cost other metrics like for example length of road, length of bridge, area of land to be develop, etc.

Hi charles,

Do we always have to follow what the client wants?

The contract tells us to do the sched in level 4 but i believe the level the client wants is level 6 or 7 which is too much

Do u think 700 activities is enough for an infra project because thats the present activities we have submitted to client.

kier

Basically, in the WBS hierarchy, level 4 of details is suffcient.

You can go to level 8 or ten, but this is too much details.

It is not necessary to double your activities in the event you go into deeper level of WBS.
