It's how MS Project calculates Duration and Work in formulas. You basically have to convert it into minutes, so 1 day would equal 8 hours (if you use 8 hrs as a standard day), and as there are 60 minutes in each hour you end up with a value of 480.
Yes youre right Ioannis. There is an overall progress information in the Statistic based on duration too. But I need progress variance per activities based on duration.
Thanks alot Harris, its good idea. I will assign budget by using formula : Duration X Unit Price. Unit Price is $1. Then Ill get BCWS and BCWP in $. For the percent BCWS or BCWP just dividing them with the Budgetted Cost of each task then the delta of both percentage is the % variance.
1. Enter a dummy cost for the software for each activity which will calculate the BCWS. This could be using the Fixed Cost column. Then use a Custom column to calculate the Planned % Complete. The cost could be the same as the original duration if you are looking for Planned % Complete based on Duration, or you could enter some more realistic values.
2. Use a Custom Column to calculate the % Complete based on the Early Start, Early Finish and Status Date.

Thanks Harris for your response. You are right that progress variance is calculated based on duration if there is no costs assigned. Im sure MsP plot their zig zag progress line using this method. But my problem is still same how to show such percent variance if the progress calculated based on duration.
Unless there is a value in terms of cost, hours or deliverables etc assigned to activities and progress of these is measured then it is not possible to give a percentage variance except as a function of the durations of activities.

If I have understand correctly your question, you can have percent completion value on project duration provide you have already enter actual data,
For an overall view, go to Project>Project Information Statistics
