MS Project vs Primavera

Before P3 I had used MSP and initially I thought MSP was so much better as P3 was so old and didnt have some basic features. Much later I had to plan my p[roject in MSP. Then I realised I had used MSP for creating plans and not for monthly updates. I still find MSP difficult to use for basic monthly updates. I prefer P3.1 by a mile.

Several years ago, when I was asked this question of comparison between MSProject and P3, I had said that it is like comparing a car with a train. They are not made for the same purpose at all. MSP is for general use, a further step to Taks in the Microsoft Outlook. Not much of planning or CPM knowledge required. In fact more you know about planning, CPM, earned value etc more you will get repelled from MSP and start going to P3.

According to my experions, in MS Project you can have 99999 entry as a task on the other hand in P3 you can have many more then MS Project.

These tools will not do the planning for you. In the same way that a spreadsheet skill does not make you into an accountant or a word processor into a world famous author





User friendliness is only one out of 20-30 requirements





for "good" planning software.



Other question syou need to ask are :-



Number one !!



Does it calculate the critical path correctly ??



There is still debate about this and wether MSP gives enough modelling flexibility eg assigning calendars to lags etc etc



Does it calculate costs correctly ?



Does it give me the flexibility for reporting etc etc etc etc

from your post one can conclude that MS Project is best fit for YOUR requirements. If somebody has different requirements he or she may come to other conclusions. From my point of view both programs have limited functionality. We estimate any software against our needs.

Actually the matter simply , the MSP because it is one of the Microsoft productions and due to the widening usage of the Microsoft Products, people which are entering easily to the MSP and use it , are more than the professionals who are using MSP, therefore the majority of the MSP’s users they are not professionals and at same time the users of Primavera they are professionals ( should have good knowledge on the Planning Field , to use Primavera ) , and as a results to that , the outputs of Primavera’s users , more useful than the outputs of the other programs’ users , but we have to recognize that Ms Project the best and most powerful programs for the planning , in terms a philosophic and flexibility. This my opinion as a senior planner working with both programs .

Yes, the Software alone does not make the final product good. But the Software can help to make the final product good if it has necessary features. Some things (like resource leveling for large project, or quantitative risk analysis) cannot be done manually. Good software can save a lot of time and money for its users suggesting optimised solutions.

If you have time you can always look back at the previous thread. Generally, i can say MSP receive a big trashing in PP.



Primavera P3 ver 3.1 is simply the best.

Yes MSP is very user friendly as compared to primavera ver 3.1 .But, the latest version Primavera ver. 5 has all the good qualities of MSP and P3.1 merged together.
