Puneet:
Look into the American Welding Society www.aws.org
Tomas Rivera
In case there is a database available with standard norms for welding of pipes and structural steel. Please share the same with us PPers.
Gentlemen,
The best thing to do is to track it in your existing project. This is the best way to know this norms , because it varies on different projects and make you more confident in using it.
MMD
Dear my friends,
They are available on the internet.
Please search with these keywords in the search engine( such as google);
"mil-std"
and
"Project management" or "wbs" or "SOW" or "project risks" and etc
Sample website :
1- www.acq.osd.mil/pm/newpolicy/wbs/wbs.html
2- sparc.airtime.co.uk/users/wysywig/sow_mt.htm
3- www.pppl.gov/me/NCSX_Engineering/SOW/ MIL-STD-245_Guidelines_SOW.pdf
4- www.incose.org/stc/mil499.htm - 85k
Best Regards
Mehdi,
I did not see any estimating norms in any of the links you provided. They lay out a specification for structuring the planning, but do not offer any norms for estimating any work.

Hi Mehdi
I am also intersting to know about the mentioned standard, could you tell us more detailed !
Morteza
M.R. - OK. I would be interested in looking at them. How do you find them? Are they available on the internet? Do you have a URL/link to them? Are they available in a print publication? If so, what is the title?

Dear Ertl,
There is standard norms for estimating from military standard.

M.Rashidi
i just wonder whether planning planet could gather some info like is there any standard for example
excavation-what machinery we need so on and so forth
well i know it depends on locality but minimum requirement there should be an agreement to it
excavation - excavator (nos depend on output), lorries (etc), bulldozer (needed?) etc
filling - dumper (?) lorries (?) compactor (?) grader (?) etc
if anyone could share some of their experience could be useful to us newcomer
DOD = Department of Defense
However, the DOD does not offer standard norms for planning and estimating as far as I know.

My friend,
DoD = Dictioanry of Military

What do you mean DOD ?
Hi,
please see DoD ( or Mil-std-***) standards for PM.

It would be good to have such standards in Planning Planet web page as a seperate link.
Well, this should be used as guideline and all planners to bear in mind the estimates of resourse, duration, cost must largely depended on local or company specific factors.
I FULLY AGREE WITH YOUR VIEWS. OUTPUT IS ALWAYS DEPENDENT ON THE OTHER FACTORS BUT STILL WE CAN HAVE THE GENERAL IDEA FOR THE OUTPUT RATES OF THE MOST ITEMS/ACTIVITY. THIS WILL HELP IN OUTLINING THE PROJECT WHEN WE DO NOT HAVE ALL THE REQUIRED DATA. WHILE DETAILING THE PROJECT SCHEDULE, WE CAN CONSIDER THE OTHER FACTORS.
REGARDS
Dear Sir,
I am supporting strongly the concept that say "every project should be delt as a uniqe case". in the project i am involved in now, we have very big quantities of excavation, the rate of every excavator depends on two major factors, number of trucks serving with, the distance between the site and the stockpiling area and some other minor factors. with the same line we will find this variance in the activities should be done with heavy equipment. so this standard could be useful in some works like blockwork, plastering and some concrete works
regards,
ahmed fouad
Its a good idea to have a standerd norms for all the activities.
It will be of great help for biginers if some guidelines / standerds / generic norms are available.
WONDERING IF IT IS AVAILABLE ANYWHERE.
REGARDS,
From the time the estimate is prepared and the price for the project tendered the ’Estimator’ should have used some form of ’Performance factor’ possibly taken from ’Spons’or using his own experience.
This should be your starting point, however, most projects are won because somebody in their wisdom wants the project at any cost and the Tender Programme has to then be tailored to suit the necessary requirements of time.
If your project has been awarded under favourable conditions and feed back on rates does not exist in your organisation then you have a problem.
Standard Performance rates(based on Work Study Methods) were a highly guarded secret from the early fifties up to until the advent of ’Management Contracting’.
Some companies still jealously guard this information as it is seen as giving too much away to their competitors.
www.hpcconsult.co.uk are currently publishing their own production rate standard norms to cover all trades.
Whilst some rates are available on the website it will be another 2 years before we attain a full listing of rates. This will then be the nearest to what we see as Standard Norms’ Working conditions/ethics around the world do vary and any rates given must be considered and WEIGHED according to the locality.
An example of this could be-
1)Work force incentive schemes Yes or No?
2)Production slow during Holy Festivals(fasting etc)
3) Poor continuity
4) Poor site management
I hope this has been of some help

Thanks for the note.
they r very useful, in creation standard projects, as well as in evalution, and how u r away from standards.
wishing u have further inf about getting any of them!
mohd
Dear Sir,
Even you can find such things, you couldn’t use that for all of your project, because each project has its characteristics and you should be care about exact norms or rates for each type of activities.
These rates shall be modified based on the project conditions.
Best regards,
Ali Vessali
I was searching about such things,
If you know something pls tell me?
Ali
thanks for ur reply.
YES.
yet, i am trying to find the others. and any help will be appreciated.
What do you mean by "Planning Norms"
