Bill Gates’s Article on Epidemic Response, and How Project Planning Techniques Must be Used

I’ve posted a new blog referencing Bill Gates’s article in Thursday’s (March 18, 2015) New York Times titled “How to Fight the Next Epidemic: The Ebola Crisis Was Terrible. But Next Time Could Be Much Worse.” The blog article can be found here:

Exploring the First Amendment: "All Projects are Investments"

My recent blog article, “Ten Amendments to the Current Practice of Project Management,” has generated a lot of good discussion and positive feedback. I’ve therefore decided to follow it up with articles that explore each of the “amendments” in more detail.

Today's blog article explores my proposed "First Amendment": that there is a need for general agreement, from team members to senior management and customers, that all projects are investments.

In PM and in Sports, the Metrics Beget the Tactics

That's the topic of a new blog article for your weekend's pleasure. It explores how changing recognition of the essence of any endeavor leads first to new metrics and then to new tactics, as happened with baseball due to the Moneyball approach.

My Proposed Amendments to Project Management Practice

I believe that the way we practice project management needs improvement. There are a lot of things that could be done better – but I decided to assemble a little list of a double handful of changes/enhancements that I believe, were they to be implemented, would have a major beneficial impact on the way projects are performed.

Educating the Boss

If the lack of comprehension and reasonableness on the part of senior management and sponsors/customers is damaging project management, what are we in the project management community going to do about it? Because, make no mistake, it is OUR PROFESSION, with its credibility and reliability, that is being damaged! So we are the ones that need to step up.

Let the Customer be Aware!

Triggered by Gary Heerkens’s article “Imposed Deadline Syndrome” which I blogged about yesterday, today I expanded the discussion: What are the responsibilities of a project sponsor/customer and how should we ensure that they understand it?

You can both respond to an opinion poll and read my new article “Let the Customer be Aware!” here:

Gary Heerkens's PM Network article "Imposed Deadline Syndrome"

The March issue of PMI’s monthly magazine PM Network is now available on-line to PMI members. Gary Heerkens’s “The Business of Projects” is always good, but I found this month’s article “Imposed Deadline Syndrome” to be especially interesting. If you are a PMI member, you can read his article for free here:

How to Choose a Good Project Manager?

H
Henry Davis 👤 Member for 14 years 3 months

I have been wondering if the stuff we learn in PMBOK really applies in real life.

One such question is about the selection of a good project manager. What are the qualities and attributes do you really look for.

In PMP, they say that communication skills, management skills are more important, and even more important than technical skills.

However, most of the time I get resumes from people who are technical, and are vying for project management positions. Some have turned out to be good project managers, and some terrible.

Do you face such situations at work?

Justifying Resources through the DRED: How to Repeal Brooks's Law

Brooks’s Law says: "(A)dding manpower to a late software project makes it later."

Although Brooks himself called his law an "outrageous simplification,” there is some truth in it. In some types of work, adding resources may delay completion. But there are also many activities whose durations can be compressed by added resources. Such activities are said to be resource elastic.
