Weekend Puzzler: Computing Critical Path Drag on a Project to Save Lives

I just posted a new “Weekend Puzzler” on my blog, titled “Computing Critical Path Drag on a Project to Save Lives.” There has been a lot going on of late with regard to drag and drag cost, so I thought I’d offer another little exercise in computing these metrics in a simple (all finish-to-start) network diagram.

And with the cost of time measured in lives saved or lost, I hope that the importance of using these metrics will come clear. Too many people die because the project that would save them takes longer than it would if the schedule were properly optimized.

What's Costing Time? CPM vs. Critical Path Analysis

I just posted a new blog article, “What’s Costing Time? CPM vs. Critical Path Analysis.” It’s a  follow-up to my previous blog article about Blake Sedore’s MIT paper on using critical path drag to optimize a manufacturing process.

That article has attracted a lot of interest. But it also seems to have led to some confusion as to the difference between CPM scheduling and critical path analysis.

Altering Schedule % Complete & Performance % complete in Primavera P6

Hello Friends,

I have made a schedule, given relationships, costs resources, and assigned baseline and started updating the progress and scheduled it on a specific date date.

It is giving 83.43 Schedule % Complete & 94.43 Performance % Complete as per applied actuals and assigned baseline & data date.

Knowing the fact that, Schedule % Complete & Performance % Complete depends upon Data Date, Baseline, Costs and actuals applied respectively. Is there still a way of altering Schedule % Complete & Performance % complete in Primavera P6

New MIT Paper: Using Critical Path Drag to Optimize Manufacturing Throughput

I know that this site is mainly construction industry oriented. However, I believe there are a few people involved in manufaturing projects who might find this ineresting. And under any circumstances, it has great significance for scheduling in general.

Relationship B/W SPI and Total Float

Hi,

I explored the relationship between schedule performance index and total float and found,

CASE NO 1.

SPI < 1 then,

i) TF = 0 (It means on schedule but delay in non-critical activities)

ii) TF > 0 (It means ahead of schedule but delay in non-critical activities)

iii) TF < 0 (It means behind the schedule and delay in both critical and non critical activities)

CASE NO 2

SPI = 1 then,

i) TF = 0 (On schedule)

ii) TF > 0 (It means ahead of schedule but critical activit

Tender Schedule Narrative

Hi All

I Would like to include a narrative of my schedule with the tender schedule. I am wondering if any of you would be able to point me to a sample tender schedule.

Also it would be great to hear tips and best practise you follow whilst preparing and submitting tender schedule.

Thanks in advance

Sachin Martin

Multiproject Resource Leveling -- Some Advanced Considerations

I just posted a new article “Multiproject Resource Leveling – Some Advanced Considerations” on my blog. In keeping with the blog’s attempt to cover more complex topics, this article goes beyond the simpler issues usually identified with resource leveling and explores both how to get a more profitable project schedule and how to use multiproject leveling data toimprove the staffing levels of the entire organization.
