Reporting directly to the Commercial Manager – Plant, and to support the activities of 3 Business Managers, you will oversee all resource allocation and logistical coordination activities for all areas of the Plant and Welding division.
VolkerRail’s Plant & Welding Division has over 100 persons operating, driving & maintaining Specialist Rail Plant, or Welding Rail, across the UK. These people are managed in 6 separate pools, with significantly varying competencies and backgrounds. Efficiencies can be attained by active coordination of this labour force, to properly control any migration between labour pools, ensuring competence standards are enforced. Safety practices can be reinforced by active management of labour allocation, monitoring of hours-worked and communication of factors contributing to health and safety risks.
In one year, VolkerRail’s Plant Division has to plan and deliver over 5000 controlled plant movements, deliveries and collections. Efficiencies can be attained by active coordination of movements, liaison with Haulage suppliers and an integrated approach to storage and stock.

- Collation, analysis and presentation of all commercial aspects of resource allocation and logistics, to support the Business Managers.
- Management of the Resourcing and Logistics team (4 persons).
- Ensure Resource coordinators demonstrate consistent application of terms and conditions, rostering principles and practices.
- Prioritisation of conflicting demands, to improve efficiency, safety and reputation.
- Production of resource utilisation information to aid management decision making.
- Improve efficiency of road and rail haulage contracts together with coordinated movement of equipment across all areas of Plant & Welding activities.
- Deliver continual improvements in process, delivery and performance.
- Working with the Division’s 3 Business Managers, to fully understand and support the needs of each business unit, while identifying synergies across resource pools that can reduce cost, improve safety and enhance reputation.
The successful candidate will have experience of labour allocation principles and processes, ideally gained within the rail industry, together with a proven record of improving efficiency from the effective coordination of a mobile and multi-skilled workforce. A skilled communicator with an analytical approach to problem solving, you will excel at working to deadlines in a commercial environment.
