Duration of 1 month

Does anyone know if I can the duration of a month to 30.42 days?

Reason:

My project lasts for some 4 years and many activities list 6 months or longer.

To have an activity start at 1st August and finish on 1st August the following year I have to manually adjust the duration to something like 12.3 months to account for the difference between 30 days and average length of a month which is 30.42 days.

Hello again Walter,

Sorry that I did not understand the question the first time. Possible that I still don't. Mike is right that according to planning principles, an activity should not be longer than 10 days. However, there may be exceptions, for example, in construction industry, you are generally allowed to use a longer duration activity for a procurement task. In your case I don't have any idea what kind of tasks your activities are representing. Assuming, they represent something that justifies using longer than usual durations, why do you have to use 12 month long activiites to finish on a particular date after an year. If it (task) is not something like an experiment which would require exactly same amount of time for each iteration then you could use longer durations for the initial months of the year and the duration could become slightly shorter as you progress. To me it would make perfect sense as it is natural to become more efficient as you repeat a process. That way you could complete the series of activities on your desired date.

Please accept my appology if I have wasted your time.

Hi Walter

Welcome to Planning Planet - the hard way.

Any task longer than 10 days is a planning abomination.

I suggest you search on Planning Abominations to get the full benefit of the debate.

Best regards

Hi Walter,

Please try this:

Under the menu "User Preferences", select the tab "Time Units". Then choose the "unit of time" as day from the drop down menu. Also select the "decimal places" equal to "2". Now you will be able to assign fractional durations to your activities.
