If you want to make Primavera acutomatically re-calculate every time you make a change, you can choose this setting by going to: Tools > Schedule > Options, and checking the "Schedule automatically when a change affects dates" option. This is not the default because having to wait for the calculations to run each time slows down the update process.
NB: To avoid making duplicate posts (which I have deleted for you), please only ckick on the "save" button once.
So by scheduling my plan this will calculate and update linked predecessor and successor activity dates.
Will scheduling my plan affect any other aspects of my plan?
As you have guessed I am new to p6 and this is my first attempt at creating a new plan so apologises for maybe the obvious questions but thanks for your replays.
P6 is not MS Project; the default setting does not automatically recalculate the schedule after every change. You have to manually re-schedule the project (Tools / Schedule) or just use the F9 key.
I recommend a little more study is called for before you publish any results. The PDF manual is available in the distribution packet. In addition, there is a (pitiful) Help system that will tell you how to do things, by not why. There are also a lot of Primavera Providers out htere who hold regular classes on P6. Good luck!

Richard,
Scheduling your plan will affect just about all the aspects of your plan that Primavera has to calculate, eg:
-early dates
-late dates
-earned value
-resource & cost forecasts
-float
-variance
-calculated durations (e.g. wbs summary activities)
