Project Copying

To my Friends

Very new to p6,so my Question is, when copying a completed project and renaming it, is there any way to remove the actual start & finish times in one hit (currently removing each start & finish one by one) exactly the way we use the fill down to remove or add what we require.

If you lost your un-statused original baseline or if someone sent you a XER file of a schedule with actuals then you have to purge all actual fields, but these can be many as not only actual dates are stored but also actual costs, resource usage actuals and time distributed production records. Do not forget about the possibility of time distributed user defined fields with actuals.

Using a Global Change [or executing formulas as in my software] would be a no-no if you have access to the database table where all actuals [performance records] are stored. Then simply select all records and at a single click of the mouse delete all such records and you will get an un-statused version of the job. With a single Global Change you can take care of remaining duration issue as our software do not make use of original duration field, although can be locked for the record and latter use with a UDF.

Take a look at the following video and try to mimic it using your software.

If you look in detail you will notice finished activities were converted into milestones, this because the global change to retain cumulative duration was not performed in purpose as to display a possible trap. Some software can perform automatic changes to original duration and this can be a source of error if your software provides such functionality. Nothing better than having access to the original un-statused baseline.

If you cannot mimic the procedure my next suggestion would be to make a list of all fields to be cleared, create a global change for every one and record a script that will run all global changes.  [still kind of insane especially if there are UDF with actuals as this would require for the script to be edited]

Another option that occurs to me [although here you will need help of knowledgeable P6 users] is that perhaps by using XER export and import you can purge within the process the actuals.

I do it in two ways,

1- Export the Baseline of the project only (using Restore baseline option).

2- Remove actuals using Global Change.
