as I was not able to set the values back to zero, I have exported the project as a MSP XML file, then re-imported it and replaced the original project with the imported file; and thats it: the offending Spending / Benefit Plan are set to zero

Spending Plan Tally values are all zero; Spending Plan montly values for the project duration are aboce zero and I cannot put them to zero; same for benefit.
Orignila budget is also zero

You have to check the Project Detail Tab-> Spending plan if any value is assigned. If Project level is selected and Spending Plan tally has value then the value is on WBS but if the spending plan has value then it is on Project level. The faster way to check is showing the column of Spending Plan and Spending Plan Tally at WBS window.

I have put every WBS level to Zero already; on the WBS screen, Spending Plan tab, every WBS level reads Zero but at the project level on the same screen I cannot put the monthly values to Zero

Spending Plan and Benefit Plan entries are available from EPS, Projects up to WBS. You should be able to remove the entries each month. You have to check from EPS -> Project to WBS of which entries have value to zero out.
