Hi Mike,

Many thanks for this information, I think I might just ask the PM for the contract documents that might give me a head way on what is required.

Ones again many thanks for the help.

Regards,

Ken

Hi Ken

It is not simple.

An earthworks programme for a linear project such as a rail track starts with the engineer's schedule of Cut to Fill.

This is a matrix in the contract documents that sets down:

1. Location and volumes of excavation zones.

2. Classification of the soil - there are usually 5 types - three of which will be acceptable for fill material.

3. These are Granular - Cohesive - Chalk each of which needs different handling techniques.

4. Location and volume of the fill zones.

From this information you can calculate the number of haul units which is the key factor in the duration of the project and the duration of each cut to fill operation.

The best software to use is a time / distance format such as Tilos or Asta PowerProject in task per line mode.

Having established all that you need a task for:

1. Each cut to fill zone

2. Drainage

3. Track bed

Best regards
