Hi Everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone would be able to explain some of the processes carried out in civil engineering.
I come from an electrical background so I have no knowledge of civils or any activities they carry out.
If i was to carry out the same exercise for the electrical industry I would explain the following:
1 - Installation of containment - Could be traywork, ladder rack, conduit, trunking, ducting etc - Basically anything that carries cables/pipework.
2 - Equipment installation - Could be sockets, light fittings, distribution boards, instruments, UPS system, PLC, motors, cabinets, fire alarms etc - These obviously need to be installed before we can connect out cables into them.
3 - Cable installation - Now we pull the cables along the containment, whether they be small 2.5mm singles or huge 240mm 4 core cables.
4 - Connection - The cable need glanding into the equipment & terminating - This could include stuffing glands, regular glands, drilling of gland plates, crimping lugs onto cables etc
5 - Testing - We would finally test the installation - this could involve the likes of insulation resistance tests, point to point tests, various earthingtests etc - Testing is usually carried out by 2 people or more depending on length of cables to test.
Please can somebody put something similar together for civils, and even possibly mechanical installation. Im just trying to broaden my knowledge.
Kind Regards,
David Craig
