Hi I'm new to scheduling and I had just learned P6 v7 and now am learning v8.3 web. My original training had me setting the data date for when i wanted an activity of a project to start (this is in a new project that will start in the future) and it worked very well. Now I'm being told to always have the data date within a week of today's date and to use constraints to "ear mark" the start of an activity on a project in the future.
This doesn't make sense to me and i was wondering if anyone could assist me in giving me their opinion on this situation.
Thanks
Hi Henderson,
you data date has nothing to do with one week activity unless you want to do filter for activities that will start in one week time. To use your data date mostly in primavera should be when you intend to schedule you project, then you change the current data date to the very date day date you are scheduling your project.
Interms of using contraint. bear you in mind that constarint means "limitation" in primavera. therefore it should be use when you want give your activity or rather your project a command to start with a future date. in P6, we have different types of constraint like start on or after, finish on or after mandatory finish, mandatory start and so on.
So never you use constraint in your project without a reason and the reason maybe because your material didnt arrive on time, with that you can apply constraint and it has to be approved by your consultant which in return, will lead to have EOT.
Know you also that, adding a constraint in your project will automatically change your project date and possibly lead to creat anoth baseline or you keep using the actual plan.
