Baselining a schedule with new work packages added

New to scheduling, hoping for some help with baselines!

I've stepped in as a scheduler mid-way through a project. The schedule I inherited has about 10 work packages included with more coming down the line. A baseline was applied to the original schedule (placeholders for packages not yet released were included).

I have been building out the schedule for new packages as they are released to me. My question is, at what point should I be assigning a baseline when I build out schedules for the new packages? Should it be the primary baseline that I assign each time a new package is added to the schedule?

Thanks for your help - any tips on using baselines would be helpful. Wrapping my head around their use and importance.

Hi Braden

Baselines are very useful when analyzing the schedules you are working on. So i suggest that you baseline your schedule af many times as it is required to make proper analysis of the project. offcourse, specific requirements with regards to the conditions of contract may restrict the baselines you are displaying for reporting. Inserting new activities or changing the activities with resources for example, should always be followed by updating  or the creation of a new baseline. Some issues to remember. If you change in progress activities , say increasing the labor recourses, and you use an "older" baseline the additional labor units are not taken into account as earned value. In this case use the current schedule as the baseline. In some projects i have maybe 10 baselines. Please do not forget to clearly document the new baseline. Say in your case "work package xxx has been added"
