I have used Microplanner for several years. I can understand your comment about the use of the tool, and I can add that I found Open Plan and Primavera particularly difficult to use after using Microplanner.
It is just what you’re used to using.
I use Primavera version 5 through to 6.1 on a daily basis at this time, depending on what project I’m working on.
I must say that I do find myself using the trial version of Microplanner which I have as a way of checking the answer I get from Primavera.
Since using Primavera I have not even considered using the resource levelling function as the answers you get are confusing to say the least, I do have a paper I wrote on the results of resource analysis within P5 if you would like a copy it can be found at www.eh.com.au in the technical papers section.
Quite simply the algorithm in Microplanner which it uses to calculate the project forward and backward pass is far and away the most robust version of such a mathematical equation on the market. (My opinion only)
The resource analysis is the standard MO of the tool for either time limited and or resource limited. It can do a time only analysis but quite frankly why would you bother when you have a tool which can calculate a perfect resource profile. (Again - My opinion only)
I will say that there are a number of things that need to be considered when choosing your settings, BUT there are an infinitesimal amount of things that will cause you pain and grief using Microplanner. (Fact)
On the other hand there are so many bells and whistles in Primavera I have found that different users can get different information calculated at the same time in the same project using different settings, and when the project is closed and re-opened it is quite simply the luck of the draw as to which information would be stored. It is not related to who did what first and who closed the project first or anything I can find; it’s simply luck of the draw.
Microplanner simply operates on the KISS principle; it has a number of settings that provide a robust output which can be justified by analysis, without long periods of head scratching like other tools. (who shall remain nameless)
I also have a small presentation on the different features of Microplanner I once used (Many times) to purport the benefits of the system and show people how the information was used.
I also know that there used to be self paced CBT available for Microplanner which could be commercially available if you ask the right people?????
