P3 SCHEDULE TO MSP

HI,



I brought up a new idea for transferring data -> no MPX (too poor), no ODBC (too complicated) just by using RA!.



Have a look at the Primavera P3 Forum.

Just an add’l. note: After creating code structure in MSP based on your P3 code structure. You’ll need to assign the codes to each activity in your schedule. Open a Gantt Entry View w/ Task Name column and insert all your custom fields, e.g. Text1, Text2, Outline Code, etc. Then assign the corresponding codes to your activities in order to see the effect of your code structure.



You will find the shortcut keys "Ctrl" + "D" helpful when assigning your code values to your activities.

Try This.



Use MPX Conversion (P3 to MPX)



Open up in MP



Go Project - Group By - More Groups - New - Field Name Select - Text 1 (Your P3 Codes go into MS project text Fields)



Once you have Organised Changed the Code to your P3 Code Description (Type & Copy Works)



Now you should have the same Layout as in P3.



But as to the Data I dont Know what got Lost

This is not impossible to do, however, excel probable is the best bet. The thinh to do is to create an numerical code within P3 prior to convertin to MPX, then create the fields in MSP, export from P3, and then copy the msp file to excel. If you then sort by the numericl code, you can copy paste the P3 codes to the MSP copy.Thereafter fix the problem wit sorts.

I’m not quite familiar yet with Access but I guess it would help to export your P3 data first to spreadsheet or Excel format then convert it into MSAccess. It might do the trick.



Pardon me, I’m still learning a little more related ’tricks’ of our trade, like Access, VBA/programming.

Try using Custom Fields or Custom Outline Codes. These will be the equivalent of Project Codes and Activity Codes or Custom Data Items in P3. Please note that it was made available starting w/ MSProject 2000 to the latest version. MSP 98 doesn’t have these functionalities.



You can either export your coding structure first in P3 to Excel or other spreadsheet file (compatible with MSP) to map your codes in P3* *(Starting w/ MSP2000, MS stopped supporting MPX formatted files). You can then import it into MSP or while in MSP, you can create your project and activity code structure (the same way you assign in P3) by clicking Tools menu > Customize option > Fields, then when you’re in Customize Fields (Custom Field tab) - under Field list (make sure you use appropriate items Task or Resource) in this case make sure "Task" is selected, in the the Type box choose Text then create all your codes (type in your Values and Description - one note though, make sure your you assigned Ordinal numbers or letters in the Description column to help you in sorting the codes in order when Grouping or Sorting) same as what you have in P3. You may also want to try using Custom Outline Codes, say if you want unique Activity ID assigned to each tasks in the schedule make sure you define also your codes first as what you have in P3 then use the Formula option in Customize Fields window to assign Text1 field as your new Activity ID column or field. Your formula can be something like: Text1=[Outline Code1]+[Outline Code2]+[Outline Code3].

MSP has Outline Codes. Use These as the Codes in P3. As to being successfull. I Doub’t it you will lose something / or Stuff Something. Maybe (I Have never done this myself) and easy way is to link p3 to Access & Access to MSP.

There is no way, due to the fact that P3 has a coding structure, and MSP has no structure, but it is not impossible if you have an open mind.
