Standard Method of Measurement

The Standard Method of Measurement (SMM7) is intended for the UK market but can of course be used anywhere.

Other areas have their own version - In Australia, they use the ASMM( you can work out what that stands for!!)

The contract has to state that the works are measured in accordance with the SMM - there is no automatic or statutory authority for the document.

Reasons for not using it are based on economy and the form of contract. It is not particularly useful on D&B projects as the design (and therefore the quantities) are not determinable.

No wasteage allowances are made. The idea is to measure quantities net and the represent what is finally incorporated into the work. Wasteage on steelwork or substructure concrete for example is for the tenderer to decide.
