Negative Schedule Variance

Hi,

Is a negative schedule variance indicates that the project will not finish on time?

In my opinion NO. because, as of the reporting period, critical items planned values may be achieved and keeping the completion date on time. meantime few non critical activities may not be started on time, keeping the EV less than the PV.

So negative variance only indicates that the value of work done is not as much as of planned.

If you are not doing enough work there will eventually be a major issue -ve SV highlight this.

If you are not doing the right work there is a problem -ve Float highlights this.

You need both sets of information (and their trends) to really understand the situation on a project. See: https://mosaicprojects.com.au/Resources_Papers_117.html
