Tracking Progress for plans without resources

The schedule should be Updated (progressed) on a regular basis and progress recorded at that point. The date on which progress is reported is known by a number of different terms such as Data Date, Update Date, Time Now and Status Date. The Current Data Date is the field Primavera uses to record this date. The Data Date is NOT the date that the report is printed but rather the date that reflects when the update information was gathered.

Whatever the frequency chosen for updating, you will have to collect the following activity information in order to update a schedule:

• Completed activities

     -Actual Start date

     -Actual Finish dates

• In-progress activities

     -Actual Start date

    - Percentage Completed

     -Duration or Expected Finish Date of the Activity

• Un-started work

     -Any revisions to activities that have not started

    - New activities representing scope changes

    -Revisions to logic that represent changes to the plan

 The schedule may be updated after this information has been collected. The recorded progress is compared to the Baseline dates

if an activity has started but not yet complete then the activity should be marked as started with an actual start date and the remaing duration and physcial % complete should be revised.

If an activity has started and finished then the activity should be marked with and actual start date and and actual finish date

an NEW activities such as approved change orders should be added to the schedule.

Any logic changes should also be performeed if the sequence has ben changed sine the last update 

Then the data date should be changed to the new date which progress has been recorded up to.

The schedule should be analyzed to make sure that it makes sense and that what it saying reflects the real conditions out in the field.

Absolutely concurr - so why wont the lazy sods do it like that?

I agree. That is why we suggest to define project activities that:

- are done by one trade with certain productivity

- have certain volume that is measured in certain units

And the reason why they don't do it is because they have to actually measure things and take records.

And no one knows how much rebar is in a wall anyway when it is all trades in one task..

this is one of the reasons why it makes sense to collect not percents but actual volumes in physical units that can be measured (meters. tons, etc.).

The usual method of updating progress on a construction programme is to estimate the % of the volume of the work completed on each task and enter that in the progess section of the software.

When the programme is rescheduled you will see if the work is ahead or behind programme.

There is nothing scientific about this because the progress % is only guesswork.

You will come across this little motto sooner or later:

"The 1st 90% of the works is done in the 1st 90% of the time - The last 10% of the work is done in the other 90% of the time"

My advice is never let a project manager update the progress on his own project - either employ someone to do it or get them to swap sites for an afternoon and do someone elses.
