i recently joined a new company (developer), and they have a project in detailed design stage. the consultant have submitted the detialed design in full and our managment have a new requirements which will affect the design massively. the consultnat submitted a design variation order in order to implement the new changes. our contract mentioned only the hourly rate in case of any additional works.
Whats is the correct way of calculating the amonut to be paid for the new changes from a developer point of view as our company dont agree with thier new fees?

Thats exactly what happened the consultant submitted his offer then we had a detailed discussion and negotiation unitl we agreed on the final fees.

You say the variations will affect the design massively which implies that a large part of the original design will have to be done again.
There is no "correct" way to calculate the ammount to be paid.
You can ask the designer to break down his fees so that you can check if it is reasonable.
My advice is to negotiate a reasonable fixed fee rather than pay by the hour.
