thanks bryan, really appreciate your help.
ES, LS, EF and LF usually are calculated without considering resource constraints. If the float is defined as the number of days (hours, seconds) an activity can be delayed without delaying the whole project it means that all constraints are taken into consideration including resource, financial and supply constraints. So this float may be not equal to LS - ES. Sometimes we cal it resource-constrained float.
- Delay is Acceleration. So -260 days float means that we need to shorten the duration by 260 days to be on time.
Actually I don’t like the concept of negative floats. I think that negative float means that there is no float or float is equal to zero. It corresponds with the definition - you cannot delay an activity without delaying project finish or violating time constraints.
Hi Guys,
Be careful of this planning books.
I had a wonderful interview with super genius planner for a very high planning manager position.
Question: what is float?
My answer: Float is equal to LS - ES or LF - LF.
The genious was not satisfied. His expectation was the old way in defining float: The number of days that the project can be delayed without delaying the whole project.
Question: what if you have negative float. This happen when you constraints the project completion "must finish" and update the status of the project, generally the project is delay.
How can you imagine -260 days the project can be delayed without delaying the completion of the whole project.
Please advice!!
Cheers,
Charlie
