Hi Scarlett & rest of PP member,



Sorry for the confussion. Just mis interpret the definition as shown in link WIKI that mentioned;



KPI (Key Performance Indicator) as a summarised measurement of indicators that can be used to assess the performance of the project.



I thought that KEY is a generalized term whether it is an Schedule, Cost, Safety, Quality, etc....indicators.



Anyway whatever it is, that’s how we monitor the performance of inherited schedule without any resources.

Dear Rex,



SPI is and efficiency rating for work accomplished, this is an "Earned Value Analysis" ratio.



SPI = Earned Value / Present Value



KPIs = Key Performance Indicators. This is associated with the output of the process, is it meeting its requirements or not. This is a quality issue.

Your post is SPI.



Is KPI the same as SPI?



It is for this reason that I think KPI is very advance topic. A lot of people got confuse.

Dear All,



One of our inherited schedule from our previous planner/scheduler is an ought to be baseline program without any resources (cost/materials/manhour). Interesting is that, only few onsite activities with greater than 7 days duration and none had more than 14 days. The project is 9 months contract and they already in their 3rd months.



Since S-curve was not introduced, we created a progress monitoring tabulating the completion of all activities that fall in periodic end week (Saturday as end week)then gathering all actual finish dates in the same periodic week.



Does this monitoring could be consider as SPI?

Dear Scarllet,



The idea behind the KPIs is to monitor the activities that maximize the customer satisfaction and minimize the cost.



For quality monitoring; you can include a numerical rating on the inspection request as follows:

Approved =4

Approved as noted = 3

Work may not proceed. Make changes are resubmit = 2

Work is rejected =0

You can also include the time spent in checking the inspection request. Hence you have two data. You will need to monitor the ratio over time.



For Safety, You have several items:

1. Rate the safety training given to each person before entering site.

2. Rate the safety plan submitted before the execution of each job.

3. Rate the Tool Box meetings.

4. Rate the number of incidents at site.

5. Rate the Daily Safety Report. And formulate a ration from the number of manhours worked at site without injury with the number of incidents.



Usually this is monitored with the Management Report on a monthly basis.

How to do a KPI?



for example, I want to do a KPI on my project:



Construction, Quality, Safety, Cost, etc.



What are the data I need to know and monitor?

How often we report KPI, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.

The basic principle would be to maximize the shareholders satisfaction and minimize the cost.



The actual area that you would want to monitor at site in my opinion are:



1. Manpower (availability and skills)

2. Material (availability and quality)

3. Equipment

4. Schedule (Planned vs actual)

5. Rates of completion

6. Quality of completed products.

7. Testing completed and the results

8. Invoicing

9. Visits by stakeholders

10. Out of scope works; changes and variations.

KPI stands for Key Performance Indicators which allows us to benchmark projects and the company against a range of data sets.



A few KPI’s are listed below:
