In my experience working with as a contractor in for Major Oil frims in Nigeria, the client would give you their milestones. Their headache not urs.
Cheers
Hi Eddie,
What Andy has told you is spot on. Milestones are significant events during the lifecycle of your project. Things like a major piece of equipment is delivered, or a particular operation completed. Andys advice to talk it over with the project manager and the team is your best approach. Not only will you find out what they think the milestones are, but youll get more "buy-in" from the project manager and the team to the schedules, plans and reports you produce.

Eddie,
Start and finish pop to mind. ;-)
Seriously though, You should look at the project deliverables, they should give you some pointers.
Also what are the big ticket items according to the project manager and the project team??
Not working in the petro chem industry Im not sure but, this is a good way to start.
