David's first employment as a planning engineer was as part of his industrial placement in 1977 then subsequently he began his career  proper as a planning engineer in 1978 with Sindall Construction both head-office based pre-tender and contract planning for a number of projects and site-based leading planning teams on major hospital projects.

As a result the fall of the residential market in the late 1980’s David returned to head office and, in addition to his previous duties he also carried out delay analysis on completed projects, ultimately leading to his first appointment as an expert witness in 1989 where he used innovative network techniques to analyse the delays.
